Meet Dr. Mick Perez-Cruet

Dr. Perez-Cruet is committed to treating every patient like he would a member of his own family. His commitment to patient care has earned him a stellar reputation with many seeking his care from multiple states across our nation. His publications in minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques have influenced the field.

Career Milestones

Receiving his BS from Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA, he studied abroad and published his first peer review article, “A comparative survey of reef fishes in Caribbean and Pacific Costa Rica,” a study which has been repeated due to its important environmental impact implications.

He earned a Master’ degree in chemistry from the University of South Florida and his MD from Tufts University in Boston under an US Air Force Scholarship. He completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. While an active-duty neurosurgeon in the Air Force, he helped develop the neurosurgical component of the Air Force Air Transportable Hospital, which is used in conflicts around the globe.  He was station at Wilford Hall, Lackland AFB and was the spine expert for the Department of Defense. 

Following his military service, he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive spine and reconstructive surgery at Rush University in Chicago under Richard G. Fessler, a leader in minimally invasive spine surgery. His clinical interests focus on minimally invasive and complex spine surgery. His research interest include stem cell intervertebral disc regeneration and he has partnered with Dr. Rasul Chaudhry from the Institute of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan to conduct pioneering studies on the use of human umbilical cord stem cells in spinal disorders. 

A former President of the MI Association of Neurological Surgeons (MANS), Dr. Perez-Cruet has also been a long-time active member of the Council of State Neurosurgical Society (CSNS) as a Michigan delegate. As an innovator and inventor, he has multiple patents focusing on minimally invasive spine surgery which have lead to the development of the BonebacTM Press, TLIF System, One-Step-Dilator and others. His role in the Pathfinder System, Spinal Concepts, Austin Texas, lead to evolution of minimally invasive top loading pedicle screw systems.

Significant Achievements

Dr. Perez-Cruet and a team of surgeons developed the first top-loading percutaneous pedicle screw system (Pathfinder, Spine Concepts, Austin, TX). 

He developed and patented the Thompson MIS line of products, including the One-Step-Dilator, BoneBac Press, and Bonebac TLIF System. His textbooks (Thieme Publishing Inc.) Outpatient Spine Surgery, Minimally Invasive Spine Fusion: Techniques and Operative Nuances, and Anatomical Approach to Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (1st and 2nd Edition) are bestsellers and represent the atlas to performing minimally invasive spine surgery. 

His research interest includes stem cell-based intervertebral disc regeneration, which has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals.
